Eta Carinae and the Homunculus: A Physics LaboratoryThe Luminous Blue Variable, Eta Carinae, and its ejecta, thrown out since the 1840s, are proving to be a very challenging system to explain. The > 100 solar mass central source (which is likely a binary system) is very complex with P-Cygni lines throughout the spectrum. Superimposed upon the stellar spectrum are many thousands of narrow absorption lines. Indeed we have found twenty different velocities between -140km/s and -580km/s with many lower levels well elevated above the ground states of numerous ions.
