A XMM Survey for Compact Objects in Supernova RemnantsThe goal of the project is to identify candidate neutron stars in Galactic supernova remnants (SNRs) through their X-ray emission. With XMM we observed the SNRs and typically find 10 - 50 X-ray sources. Almost all are either background galaxies or foreground stars. Therefore we must also pursue detailed optical/infrared follow-up observations to find counterparts for these X-ray sources and classify them. At the depth of the XMM observations, practically all confusing X-ray sources should have identifiable optical/IR counterparts. We have done a preliminary analysis of the XMM data and identified likely counterparts to the X-ray sources from available surveys(DSS, 2MASS). We then obtained wide-field optical/IR data from Palomar to get counterparts for the remaining sources. This analysis is underway: while often a single bright source is in the XMM error circle and can be considered a counterpart, in a number of cases we must do more detailed studies and evaluate several fainter optical/lR sources. We hope to have the final analysis of the XMM + Palomar data done this Fall. It is possible that additional, deeper optical/IR data may be necessary. We expect to publish our results by the end of this year.
