From Simple Plane-Parallel to Complex Monte Carlo Calculations of Solar Fluxes and Radiances for Cloudy AtmospheresIn my presentation, I will describe several approximation methods with different level of complexity; they will be gradually applied to simple examples of horizontally inhomogeneous clouds. Understanding of photon horizontal transport and radiative smoothing can help to improve accuracy of the methods The accuracy of the methods will be compared with the full Monte Carlo calculations. The specifics of Monte Carlo in cloudy atmospheres will be also discussed. A special emphasis will be put on the strong forward scattering peak in the phase functions.
