Observed Relationship Between Ion Energization and the Broadband ELF SpectrumMany existing theories linking broadband ELF wave activity (BBELF) to ion energization and outflow are based on the gyro-resonant heating of ions. Recent studies on the properties of these broadband waves show that other mechanisms may be more relevant. Using data from the Polar satellite, we will present an analysis of the observed relationship between the broadband electric field spectrum and ion energization across the cusp, auroral oval, and polar cap.
