An Efficient Variable Length Coding Scheme for an IID SourceA scheme is examined for using two alternating Huffman codes to encode a discrete independent and identically distributed source with a dominant symbol. This combined strategy, or alternating runlength Huffman (ARH) coding, was found to be more efficient than ordinary coding in certain circumstances.
