Near-Earth Asteroids Accessible to Human Exploration with High-Power Electric PropulsionThe diverse physical and orbital characteristics of near-Earth asteroids provide progressive stepping stones on a flexible path to Mars. Beginning with cislunar exploration capability, the variety of accessible targets steadily increases as technology is developed for eventual missions to Mars. Noting the potential for solar electric propulsion to dramatically reduce launch mass for Mars exploration, we apply this technology to expand the range of candidate asteroid missions. A robust and efficient exploration program emerges where a potential mission is available once per year (on average) with technology levels that span cis-lunar to Mars-orbital capabilities.
