Nanosecond radar observations of the ocean surface from a stable platformThe measurement of ocean surface waves with a nanosecond radar pulse from a fixed platform at vertical incidence is discussed. By reducing the pulse width of radar until the pulse width resolves the vertical water wave structure, a set of radar returns is available to describe the ocean surface characteristics which differs from returns obtained by conventional radars. A block diagram of the radar and the principles of operation are presented.
