The effects of elevated temperatures on the structural properties of fiber composite materials suitable for use in space shuttle and other space vehiclesThe effects of high temperatures on the structural properties of fiber composite materials for use in spacecraft structures are investigated. Various mechanical properties of boron reinforced aluminum alloys were measured. It was observed that cycling these materials through temperatures that varied from room temperature to 425 C could seriously degrade the properties. The extent of the observed effects depended on alloy type and the maximum cyclic temperature used. Results are discussed in terms of upper and lower strength bonds calculated from the strengths of individual fibers.
