Note Concerning Backscatter in the Auroral Zone [Note Sur Une Rétrodiffusion En Zone Aurorale]From October 1960 to February 1961, a field-recording receiver was operated continuously at the Paris-Saclay ionospheric station to receive a transmission from Landres to Reykjavik on a frequency close to 32.8 MHz. The permanent traffic transmitter installed at Kingston-Blount applied a power of approximately 20 kW to a corner reflector antenna oriented toward Iceland, providing a gain of 25 dB at a low elevation angle of nearly 4°, in order to facilitate the London–Reykjavik link via scattering near the midpoint of the path and at an altitude of approximately 80 km (see Figure 1). However, a very strong field from this transmission was received at Paris-Saclay on various occasions, the temporal distribution of which is shown in Figure 2. Based on the characteristics of the receiving antenna, it was estimated that a voltage of 50 μV corresponded to a field strength 15 to 20 dB above 1 μV/m—that is, 6 to 10 μV/m.
