Turbojet Lift Engine Design for Vtol TransportsThe pure hoverjet, utilizing separate turbojet engines for lift and cruise phases of flight, is an interesting high speed VTOL transport airplane configuration. The results of a brief analysis are presented with the intent to: (I) define the effects of some general powerplant installation and operating variables on VTOL transport performance; (2) indicate desirable turbojet lift engine design characteristics with respect to compressor pressure ratio, turbine inlet temperature, component efficiencies and thrust augmentation; and (3) examine the unique lift engine operating requirements for feasible ways of reducing engine specific weight. The figure of merit used to gauge airplane performance is airplane range.
