Nematic liquid crystals for optical shutters: A conceptNonmechanical shutter utilizes nematic crystals to attenuate illumination, thus protecting light-sensitive devices such as vidicon or image orthicon tubes and phototubes. Opacity of liquid crystals is controlled by photosensor.
