Damper design from a structural engineer's point of viewA nonlinear structural analysis, employing the nonlinear damper characteristics obtained from a damper test, was successfully performed on the Mariner spacecraft's solar-panel system, and the result was compared with results from a system-level spacecraft test in which some solar-panel tip dampers bottomed at a certain frequency. The analysis showed that the damper bottoming was attributable to a jump phenomenon that can result when a damper's response is not single-valued at some frequency.
