Design studies of lift fan engines suitable for use in civilian VTOL aircraftLow pressure ratio fan engines are receiving increasing attention as a means to provide low speed lift for civilian VTOL transports. Two general types of fan lift engines that are being studied are integral fans and remote power fans. Preliminary engine design studies of both types of lift fan systems have been made. The paper summarizes a portion of the results of the engine design studies, including the crucial engine requirements, and some of the characteristics of the emerging engine designs of each type.
