Overview of composites for space shuttle structures. The space shuttle, proposed as an earth to orbit reusable vehicle, presents a challenge to materials and design engineers to apply light-weight materials. To provide large payloads, the shuttle structure must be as light weight as possible, yet possess a high degree of structural integrity over a lifetime of multiple flights. This paper reviews the general maturity of advanced composites considered for various components of the shuttle and discusses the range of potential applications for such materials.
