Mechanical systems readiness assessment.Development of a methodology for applying structure-borne acoustics to the readiness assessment, fault isolation, and automatic checkout of mechanical devices. The twofold objective of the study was to determine the practical feasibility of implementing structure-borne acoustics on future space programs and to provide guidelines toward minimization of cost and effort in the implementation of this technique. It is concluded that the structure-borne acoustics technique lends itself to reducing checkout, operation, maintenance, and fault diagnosis of mechanical systems.
