Modulation and detection of optical signalsA summary of information is presented which is related to the modulation and detection of information on optical carriers. It emphasizes the treatment of information transfer through an entire system. The most common configurations are considered: intensity modulation, amplitude modulation, frequency or phase modulation, and both direct and coherent detection. In assessing these configurations information capacity and message signal-to-noise ratio are used as a basis of comparison. The physical and geometric treatment of optical heterodyne (or coherent) detection is given.
