Preliminary report on infrared radiometric measurements from Mariner 9The results of the preliminary analysis of the Mariner 9 radiometer data are: (1) Gross thermal characteristics of Mars agreed qualitatively with those observed in 1969: (2) a dust storm changed the thermal picture of Mars radically with average dayside temperatures lower by about 20K than without the dust storm; (3) over large-scale physiographic visual features, no univocal correlation between albedo and thermal inertia seems to exist, and (4) surface particle sizes derived from observed thermal inertias vary between 0.006 cm and 0.5 cm.
