HELIOS - Co-operative solar probe.

In June 1969, the Federal Republic of Germany and the United States of America agreed on a joint cooperative solar probe project designated HELIOS. This basic agreement provides for the design, development, test and launch of two flight spacecraft (the first in mid-1974 and the second in late 1975) to within 0.3 AU of the sun. The primary purpose of the two spacecraft is to investigate the properties of and processes in interplanetary space in the direction of and close to the sun. In this technical paper, the scientific mission and German and American plans/design to accomplish this mission are presented by the German and United States Project Managers respectively. Emphasis is placed on the advanced technology required to successfully accomplish this mission.
