Turbomachinery design for Space Shuttle auxiliary power systems.Review of the major factors affecting Space Shuttle auxiliary power system design decisions, and discussion of turbine aerodynamic design optimization techniques. The working fluid to be used and the vehicle mission requirements are shown to be the two major factors that affect auxiliary power system design decisions. Analytical techniques developed for optimization of turbine aerodynamic design parameters are shown to be applicable to transient-state simulation and design optimization of other components, including the turbine controller.
