A search for H alpha emission from interstellar clouds.Upper limits have been determined for the emission measures of five interstellar clouds. These limits are significantly smaller than the emission measures predicted by a recent model in which the variation in the column-density ratio Na/Ca(+) among interstellar clouds is attributed to differences in the temperature, density, and hydrogen ionization fraction of the clouds.
