Approximations to the plasma dispersion functionTwo simple approximations to the plasma dispersion function are analyzed and compared. One, is the resonance distribution approximation which is based on the utilization of resonance velocity distributions; the other, is the two-pole approximation proposed by Fried, Hedrick, and McCune (1968). The approximations are applied to Landau and whistler waves. Possible means of improving the two-pole approximation are discussed.
