Particle and field payloadsThe capability of the Space Shuttle for the conduct of magnetospheric experiments is critically analyzed. Some physical problems are discussed on which a particle and field payload program could be based. They include the study of magnetospheric plasma processes, wave-particle interactions and auroral phenomena, both by artificial modification experiments and by systematic wide-scale observations of naturally occurring magnetospheric perturbation events.
