The first earth resources technology satellite /ERTS 1/The present work describes the ERTS 1 spacecraft and data collection system and reviews the operation of the system since the satellite was launched in July, 1972. Perhaps the most significant result of the ERTS 1 mission is the realization that features related to land resources or to environmental processes can be mapped synoptically for very large areas on scales up to 1:250,000 without substantial loss of definition. Examples of color composite images obtained by ERTS 1 are shown.
