Nonstationary homogeneous nucleationA computer calculation was made of the relaxation time to steady-state nucleation in a supersaturated vapor. A binary-collision model of nucleation based on classical liquid-drop thermodynamics was used. The nondimensional nucleation relaxation time is plotted as a function of the critical drop size for various values of the surface-tension parameter. The curves permit a rough estimation of the limit of the validity of steady-state nucleation theory.
