Space Shuttle communications and tracking systemThe Space Shuttle Program is briefly described, and the major program milestones (first horizontal flight, first vertical flight, and initial operational capability) extending over a period from 1976 to 1978 are reviewed. The communications and tracking requirements, and the system developed to meet them, are discussed for the ascent, on-orbit, reentry, and landing phases of a Shuttle mission.
