Progressive failure of notched composite laminates using finite elements

An incremental, nonlinear, finite element program capable of tracing the damage that occurs in a notched laminated composite, before ultimate failure takes place, is described. Computer predictions for the ultimate failure load and failure modes are compared to experimental results for two laminates containing holes and loaded in uniaxial tension. The comparison is quite favorable.
