Asteroid collisions, craters, regoliths, and lifetimesLaboratory experiments and computer modeling are used to predict the development of regoliths on all asteroids more than a few tens of kilometers in diameter, allowing for a wide range in the intrinsic strength of asteroidal surface materials. The high frequency of interasteroid collisions requires nearly all asteroids to be fragments of precursors.
