Turbulence measurements in a rectangular jetThe paper deals with hot-wire measurements in a rectangular incompressible jet issuing into a medium at rest. The flow field of the jet was found to be characterized by the presence of three distinct regions with respect to the mean axial velocity on the center line, referred to as potential core region, two-dimensional type region, and axisymmetric type region. The onset of the second region appears to be at downstream locations where the shear layers from the short dimension of the nozzle meet. Similarly, the center line velocity decay is first of axisymmetric nature at a downstream location where the two shear layers from the long dimension of the nozzle meet. The conditions for the existence of a rectangular jet of an aspect ratio of 16.7 with the laminar tophat profile at the exit are identified.
