Most probable states in magnetohydrodynamicsA method is developed for selecting 'most probable' MHD states compatible with certain global constraints (e.g., the energy, the toroidal magnetic flux, the total toroidal electric current, or the magnetic helicity). These states occur as the solutions of nonlinear partial differential equations which are far simpler than the original MHD equations. The stabilized Z pinch is discussed by way of illustration of the theory of probable states.
