Galaxies and far-infrared emissionThe far-infrared luminosities of the central few hundred parsecs of many galaxies may exceed by more than an order of magnitude the amount expected from late-type stars. However, for the M82, NGC 253, NGC 1068 and several other galaxies studied in the present paper, the inferred mass-to-luminosity ratios are within the limits expected for stellar distributions containing early-type stars.
