Evaluation of the effects of solar radiation on glassesFour optical materials were exposed to simulated solar and particulate radiation in a space environment. Sapphire and fused silica experienced little change in transmittance while optical crown glass and ultra low expansion glass darkened appreciably. A complete analysis of the 500 hour simulated space exposure test was conducted. Additionally, studies were performed to aid in sample selection for a 100 hour simulated exposure test.
