Preliminary sizing of vibration absorber for space mast structuresA simple method of sizing a vibration absorber for a large, cantilevered flexible mast is presented. The method is based on Den Hartog's vibration absorber theory for two-degree-of-freedom systems. Generalized design curves are presented as well as specific numerical results for a candidate space experiment in which a long flexible antenna mast is attached to the shuttle orbiter and dynamically excited by orbiter accelerations. Results indicate that for large flexible masts, the mass of the vibration absorber required to meet stringent tip deflection tolerances becomes prohibitively large.
