X-ray bursters

The main properties of X-ray bursts, as well as the value of these bursts for understanding low-mass X-ray binaries, are discussed. The analysis of the X-ray spectrum of bursts during their decay has provided evidence that X-ray bursts arise from neutron stars. It is thus illustrated how observations of the X-ray bursts may be used to obtain information about the properties of neutron stars. In particular, a method for measuring the radii of neutron stars from observations of X-ray bursts is proposed, based on the results of the blackbody radii of X-ray bursters.
