The 22-year solar cycle - A heliospheric oscillationA new mechanism is proposed for the origin of the 22-year solar cycle in which the solar cycle is caused by a large scale oscillation of the heliosphere. In its simplest terms the oscillation is directly analogous to an LC oscillator, with the heliospheric current system providing the inductance, and accumulated charge near the heliosphere boundary providing the capacitance. Estimates of the oscillation period using reasonable parameters are close to 22 years.
