Measuring Surface-Shear Stress in a Wind TunnelTwo-wire skin friction gage gives both magnitude and direction of mean and fluctuating stresses. Heated wires lie at surface of gage, measure airflow by cooling effect. Wires perpendicular to each other to measure flow direction as well as magnitude. Used successfully in various turbulent flow fields, including separating three-dimensional boundary layer over cone at high angle of incidence.
