Estimation of divergence and vorticity using multidimensional smoothing splinesLaplacian smoothing splines, smoothing splines on the sphere, and smoothing pseudo splines on the sphere are presented. The method of generalized cross validation to choose the smoothing parameter is described. These methods are applied to estimate divergence and vorticity of the atmosphere from wind speed and wind direction.
