On the bimodality of temperature and moisture near stratocumulus cloud tops

The observed distributions of the thermodynamic variables near stratocumulus top are highly bimodal (Mahrt and Paumier, 1982). This suggests a model based on the assumption of a joint bimodal distribution of parcels, obtained as the weighted sum of two binormal distributions. The properties of joint normal distribution, G, show that there will almost always have two distinct populations.
