Impact of Flares on the Solar Terrestrial EnvironmentThe current knowledge of the flare process and its particle and photon emissions is summarized. The impact of flares on the different regions of the solar-terrestrial environment, in order of their distance from the Sun to Earth: the heliosphere, the magnetosphere, the ionosphere, and atmosphere are considered. The effect of flares on modern technology and manned spaceflight is described. In all cases, an attempt is made to distinguish clearly what is known, what is suspected, and is unknown.
