Longitudinal trial functions and the cosmic ray energy scaleFormulae which were proposed to represent the longitudinal profiles of cosmic ray air showers are compared, and the physical interpretation of their parameters is examined. Applications to the problem of energy calibration are pointed out. Adoption of a certain especially simple formula is recommended, and its use is illustrated.
