Three dimensional crack closure measurements

This paper describes fatigue crack growth and retardation experiments conducted in polycarbonate test specimens. This transparent model material allowed optical interferometry measurements of through-the-thickness fatigue crack opening profiles. Crack surface displacements were then obtained through the specimen thickness and are discussed in terms of three-dimensional aspects of fatigue crack closure.
