Forbidden S II images of the Io torusThe Io plasma torus was studied by obtaining short exposure images in the forbidden S II 6731 A emission line over as long intervals and on as many nights as possible. The results support the earlier conclusion drawn from ground-based data that the red forbidden S II emission is often brightest approximately in the active sector. It is shown that the region of strongest S II intensity modulation with magnetic longitude is essentially coincident with the region of brightest S III EUV emission. The possible effects of subcorotational velocities on ion density distributions in the torus are discussed.
