Tracer transport by planetary waves - A comparison of explicit and parameterized modelsA two-dimensional stratospheric tracer transport parameterization is developed using the theory of small-amplitude generalized Lagrangian means and tested by two experiments. The first tests the parameterization for mean climatological winter conditions without wave transience; the second tests it in the presence of transience and critical layers, when nonacceleration conditions are strongly violated. Tracer transport by Eulerian velocity, the residual velocity, and the nondivergent mean meridional Lagrangian velocity are compared.
