Laboratory experiments on reconnection in current sheetsInsights obtained from laboratory experiments concerning the reconnection of current sheets are discussed. Consideration is given to: the nonlocal characteristics of reconnection; the build-up of pinch current sheets; and impulsive flux transfer events. The application of the experimental results to present models of current sheet reconnection during solar flares is also discussed.
