Detecting Pores in SiC CoatingsLiquid-penetrant/fluorescence technique reveals cracks and pinholes in protective coatings. Developed for checking quality of overcoatings on silicon carbide layers on advanced carbon/carbon substrates. Technique similar to other liquid-penetrant/fluorescence techniques used to make pores visible. Porous areas absorb more suspension and therefore accumulate more fluorescent particles. They fluoresce more brightly than their surroundings.
