The properties of X-ray selected BL Lac objectsThe optical and radio properties of the X-ray-selected BL Lacs in the Einstein Medium sensitivity Survey (EMSS) are presented and compared with those of the HEAO 1 A-2 sample and with those of radio-selected BL Lacs. Definite redshifts are determined for two of four EMSS BL Lacs and a probable redshift if determined for a third. The number-flux relation of BL Lacs is found to show a drastic flattening below fluxes of order 10 to the -12th erg/sq cm/s; this is interpreted as evidence that BL Lac do not share the evolutionary properties of quasars.
