Constraints on resolving meso-alpha and meso-beta phenomena using a space-based Doppler lidar wind profilerLidar shot management and wind computation algorithms are used to determine the constraints on resolving mesoscale (alpha and beta) wind fields. Examples of simulated Doppler lidar performance in resolving wind gradient features are presented using currently proposed scan and signal processing parameters, and GCM model outputs are used as input wind fields. Results indicate that with the present constraints on lidar lifetime, scan rates, and orbit altitudes, the limits of mesoscale wind feature resolution are close to wavelengths of 100 km.
