Numerical simulation of transitionThe paper presents numerical algorithms for studying the physics of transition and turbulence in simple geometries. The highly nonlinear stages of transition prior to turbulent spot formation are studied in detail. The use of simulations to study the sensitivity of laminar flow control techniques in the nonlinear regime is demonstrated. A new instability mechanism associated with the center modes in channel flows is revealed.
