Relations between VAS physical retrievals and their first guess inputThe Smith (1983) physical retrieval algorithm, which is designed to yield mesoscale soundings through a blending of first-guess limited fine mesh-derived profiles with VISSR Atmospheric Sounder (VAS) detected radiance data by means of an inversion of the radiative transfer equation, yields retrievals that may be better related to ground truth data than the guess profiles at some levels. At other levels, the first-guess profiles were slightly superior to the retrievals. Correlation functions related to the window and midtropospheric temperature channels indicate that magnitudes and orientations of retrieval gradients were intermediate to those of the guess data and brightness temperatures.
