Wide binary stars at the Galactic polesResults are reported from a search for high-Galactic-latitude wide binaries down to visual magnitude 14 on five digitized Schmidt-telescope plates. The data-reduction and analysis techniques are described in detail, and the results are presented in graphs and briefly characterized. The number of wide binaries and the estimated wide-binary number density are both three times smaller than those found by Bahcall and Soneira (1981), but still too large to be consistent with the predictions of physical models. Possible explanations for this discrepancy are explored.
