Towards a rigorous approach to artificial dissipationArtificial dissipation in modern computational fluid dynamics is something of an art. In spite of the dramatic strides made over the last decade, dissipation continues to lack a quantitative theory with predictive power. Such a theory, based on entropy production, is presented. An important side-effect is nonlinear stability for schemes which satisfy certain conditions.
